At Burlcore Mining Company Limited, responsible operations mean looking after the people who make those operations possible. In August 2026 the company rolled out a comprehensive first aid and emergency response programme for its on-site security personnel, delivered as part of the wider worker welfare mission supported by the Burlcore Foundation.
Security teams are often the first to reach the scene of an incident, whether it is a minor workplace injury, sudden illness, or an operational emergency. By equipping these frontline workers with practical, internationally recognised life-saving skills, Burlcore is closing the gap between an incident occurring and professional medical help arriving.
Scope of the training
Practical skills for real mining conditions
The curriculum was designed specifically for the environmental and operational realities of a medium-scale mining concession in East Africa. It covers the situations security staff are most likely to face before a clinician reaches the site.
- Basic Life Support (BLS): CPR and the safe use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
- Trauma and wound management: Controlling severe bleeding, stabilising fractures, and dressing abrasions before medical handover.
- Environmental emergency response: Rapid recognition and treatment of heat exhaustion and dehydration in the regional climate.
- Incident triage: Assessing emergencies quickly, prioritising care, and coordinating with Busia District health facilities.

This security-focused medical training is a natural extension of the investments Burlcore Mining and the Burlcore Foundation are already making in community and worker welfare. From community boreholes and school water points to the weekly worker nutrition programme, the approach is the same: build practical, lasting capacity that stays behind after the trucks leave.
By upskilling local security hires with transferable first aid qualifications, Burlcore continues to build a resilient, empowered workforce. It reinforces a simple but powerful principle: responsible mining is measured not just by what is extracted, but by the safety, skills, and infrastructure that remain in the community.
